Or at least from the last 30 years or so…And only considering the films I have seen.
Anyway, after Thanksgiving, family visits, sick days and other distracting stuff it is time for me to focus on what I came to LA for again, what I love doing, what I need…Acting of course! So for your viewing pleasure, education, and to get in the spirit of the coming award season, I hereby present to you my personal top ten of best acted scenes…Spoilers ahead!
Annette Bening in The Kids Are Alright
In this movie Anette Bening plays one of the wives in a lesbian couple that has two kids through sperm donation. When the older kid (played my the lovely Mia Wasikowska) wants to meet her sperm donor, the family dynamic gets shaken quite a bit. In this scene Anette’s character finds out he wife has been cheating on her with sperm donor daddy.
Stanley Tucci in The Lovely Bones
Unfortunately I couldn’t find the scene I was looking for online, but this clip should give you a pretty good impression. The whole movie I wasn’t aware that this character of a child murderer was played by Stanly Tucci. Who I loved, but looks so different, in Easy A and Julia & Julia, among others. Check this out!
Amy Adams in Junebug
This scene really doesn’t need much of an introduction. Watch and enjoy!
Chris Cooper in American Beauty
This scene is most impressive when you’ve seen the entire movie (which you really should have!), because it’s in sharp contrast to how this character has behaved so far. It’s all fabulous…
Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network
Jesse plays Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, an annoying, unattractive asshole. And yet he makes him fascinating to watch!
Rose Byrne in Bridesmaids
It’s not too often that Oscars are handed out to comedic performances but I think this one should really not be overlooked. Rose Byrne plays Helen, a spoilt rich bitch who wants to claim the bride Lilian as her best friend, when really Annie (a fantastic Kristen Wiig) is.
Ron Franz in Into the Wild
I can’t even watch this clip now as I’m pasting it in this post because it breaks my heart every single time. I don’t know why this actor didn’t get more recognition for his work, maybe because the role wasn’t big enough, but it’s wonderful. He plays an old man with a ranch who’s taken in a young guy to work for him for a while.
Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones’ Diary
If you’re a girl, you probably knew which scene this was before you even saw the screengrab underneath. If you’re a guy, you’ve probably evaded this movie just because it’s labelled chick flick. But this is some comedy gold, regardless of weather you like Stallone movies or Grey’s Anatomy.
Christian Bale in The Machinist
Again, I couldn’t find the scene online, but this should give you an impression. This movie is best seen without knowing anything about it in advance, it’s one of my all-time faves. Christian Bale goes through an astonishing transformation in the movie, and I’m not just talking about his creep weight loss. After all, every Hollywood starlet goes through that phase…
Katherine Heigl in Grey’s Anatomy
I know, I know, you’ll just have to forgive me for putting this in here, I’m a girl who loves to cry while watching movies/TV. Anyway, I just think it’s a shame to see where Katherine Heigl’s career is going, because I believe she is a good actress and she proves it here. The acting might be big, but I believe every word. And when she says “What about me?” *dies*
Also worth mentioning: Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia, but the performance can’t be caught in one scene. It’s really her slow descent into depression. If I could find some scenes online, this portrayal would definitely have been in Katherine Heigl’s place.
