An Open Letter to Zelda Williams

Yesterday, Zelda Williams, daughter of actor Robin Williams, wrote an open letter about nepotism and second generation entertainers in Hollywood on her tumblr. It was interesting to me because just recently I had read an article in a magazine about how children of famous actors/singers face a lot of challenges others don’t. The bottom line being that if they don’t follow in their parents’ fabulous footsteps they’re considered failures and if they do they’re considered having their position only because of their famous mom or dad.

Because I had strong feelings towards the subject matter, I decided to write my own open letter. To Zelda Williams, or Emma Roberts, or Lilly Collins, or any other second generation actor… Continue reading

The Oscars, The Movies & Me

skippy designsLast Sunday it was Oscar slash Academy Awards time again, or as Billy Crystal said it: millionaires handing each other golden statues in a time of recession. I personally think the Oscars have been very boring the last few years. Safe jokes, presenters who aren’t comedians…And to make it worse: this year didn’t even have stunning dresses or fresh new faces!

Not that it matters. It still is and always will be the ultimate dream for any actor, including myself, to win one of those shiny naked men. See the proof in the picture above, where I hold my very first Oscar at age 11.  This particular one was made by my mother and uncle for the Dutch holiday Sinterklaas. I received my last Oscar only a month ago, the Oscar for Best Girlfriend, left by my boyfriend after he departed LA. Because despite the decent dullness, there’s always one thing the Academy Awards Show succeeds in… Continue reading

About An Actor: Annette Bening

Annette-Bening-Vanity-FairWho? Annette Bening

Type: Independent woman

First Noticeable Role: The Grifters

Lucky Bitch or Ass-Off-Worker:  Annette is one of those common well trained actor success stories. 15 Audition Tapes of Famous Actors

JessicaAlbaEllePhotoshoot Jessica Alba auditioning for the role of Agent 99 in Get Smart, which went to Anne Hathaway? Julia Roberts doing an unknown audition before she became Pretty Woman? A very young Natalie Portman auditioning for her breakthrough role as Mathilde in Leon: The Professional? Robert DeNiro auditioning for the role of Sonny Corleone in The Godfather?

I’ve always wanted to see audition tapes of famous actors, for many reasons. First, it’s really refreshing to see that the stars too, had (and have!) to stand in front of a 4 headed committee, unflattering light and everything, acting with a monotoning casting director. And second, it’s really educative! You see pure self-generated acting from the greats without props and sets and costars. You might also get an idea of what your audition tapes look like, and what does and doesn’t work.

So, instead of the weekly “About an Actor” I present to you here: 15 great (and not so great) audition tapes of famous actors… Continue reading

About An Actor: Emma Stone

EmmaStonephotoshootWho? Emma Stone

Type: Goofy girl

First Noticeable Role: Superbad

Breakthrough: Easy A

Lucky Bitch or Ass-Off-Worker: Definitely a girl who took a lot of initiative on her own, but was lucky in the fact that she was supported by her parents.

Emma joined a local theater group at the young age of 11 in her hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona, and performed in a dozen of productions with them. She was even home schooled for a while so she could tour around with them. Then, at age 15, the ever-sassy Emma made a Powerpoint presentation for her parents in which she tried to convince them to let her move to Los Angeles, Madonna’s Hollywood playing in the background… Continue reading

New Weekly Column: About An Actor

CareyMulliganphotoshootAs a starting actress I look at news about famous actors in a different way. I wonder: How did they get their start? Did they work their ass off or were they just lucky?  Even though every actor has a different story and there is no formula for succes, there’s always something to take away from the biographies of working actors.

And because I suspect I’m not the only one who thinks that, I present to you the new “About an Actor” column  in which I will post a little background info and some of my observations about an actress/actor every Monday. If you share yours we can maybe build an understanding about what makes different actors special!

Up this week: Miss Carey Mulligan… Continue reading
